Fieldbus in Basic Research.

an-070-Basic-Research

Fibre optic FIP field bus in gravitational wave antenna
One of the most demanding tasks in basic research is the detection of gravitational waves predicted by Albert Einstein. The detection of those waves is extremely difficult, because their interaction with masses is very weak. Unfortunately those gravitational wave antennas must be extended over several kilometres. A major project in Europe is named VIRGO. It is financed jointly by the French CNRS and the Italian INFN. A plurality of research institutes contribute components to the detector situated in Cascina near Pisa in Italy, inaugurated Mai 2007. The University ofs Automation Paris' Laboratoire de l'Accelerateur Lineaire worked on the ultra high vacuum system, where the large gate valves etc. are operated via FIP I/O networks using fibre optic communication made by Hirschmann.

Drinking Water Production in Toulouse.

toulouse

Fiberoptic FIP fieldbus in purification plant.
Toulouse is running two water treatment plants, capable of purifying 250 000 m³ per day and transporting it via a 1320 km long network to the local industry and the town's citizens. An average inhabitant of Toulouse consumes 280 liters per day, increasing 8% annually. Maintaining the water quality is a crucial task that must be controlled and monitored by state of the art automation systems. The extended area of the plant makes fiber optic transmission paramount, resulting in Hirschmann providing fiber optic repeaters to the installed FIP I/O control networks in the plants of Clairfont and Pech-David.

Fiber Optic Fieldbus systems in oil production.

068-fiber-optic-in-ölförderung

Recently developed oil fields in the United Arab Emirates networked with highly available fiber optic field buses.
Production has recently started at two new oilfields 50km southwest of Abu Dhabi City, Rumaitha in the countries interior and Al Dabb’iya on the coast. The daily production capacity of the fields is about 100,000 barrels. The facilities for producing, storing and metering the crude oil have been in operation since late 2005. Operating safety is paramount here, so the process control system has been designed with full redundancy, and data is transmitted between the controllers and the remote I/O stations via fail-safe, redundant optical fibers. The danger of explosion that is inherent in such facilities presents a particular challenge. This challenge must be met with ATEX approved devices that are also capable of withstanding high ambient temperatures.

Field bus network on deep sea oil exploration platform.

Feldbusnetz auf Tiefsee Ölbohrplattform

Oil production not only takes place on land and in shallow coastal waters but also on the high seas.

The drilling platforms must keep their position accurate to a few metres with engine power so that the boring rods don't break. The highest demands are placed on the operational reliability of the dynamic position control because should the platform drift off there is the danger of great environmental damage and downtime. Converteam has designed a control system for the Transocean Sedco Forex platforms that meet the highest safety demands. As well as other safety precautions the control components are therefore designed with multiple redundancy and networked with fail safe fiber optic cables.
